Used for throwing in and out of gear the speed-motion on lathes

Used for throwing in and out of gear the speed-motion on lathes. On depressing the lever, the shaft of the large wheel is drawn backward by reason of the slot in which it slides being cut eccentrically to the center or fulcrum of the lever.

Only the input is driven; every other part of this model moves by physics (MuJoCo), and its ratios are measured. Run it live, change its parameters, or switch the friction off to see the output stop.

Modelled as
Brown's figure 56: the wheel (40 teeth) runs on a journal carried by a slide; the journal sits in the lever's slot, an arc struck about a centre below the fulcrum, so depressing the lever draws the wheel back out of mesh with the driven pinion (14) and releasing it lets the wheel run back in
Measured
in gear −0.3500 (−14/40 = −0.35), thrown out 0.0002 (0), back in −0.3519; max penetration 0.03 mm; also passes at 15 and 60 rpm
Notes
The hand is the lever's spring reference (0.5 rad at 3 s, 0 at 7 s); the wheel starts half a tooth out of phase so it meshes cleanly. The slot's arc had to cover the journal's whole path (it ran off the end at first). batch7/gen056.py. Negative control: the slot's walls out of contact → nothing holds the journal and the wheel drifts out of mesh at once (−0.018).
