An engine with crank motion like that represented in 93 and 279 of this table, the crank-wrist journal working in a slotted cross-head, A. This cross-head works between the pillar guides, D, D, of the engine framing.
Only the input is driven; every other part of this model moves by physics (MuJoCo), and its ratios are measured. Run it live, change its parameters, or switch the friction off to see the output stop.
Modelled as
A 4 cm crank with a fly-wheel, turned at 30 rpm. Its wrist journal, 1.2 cm across, works in a straight slot across cross-head A with 0.01 cm play, as in Nos. 93 and 279. A carries the piston-rod. Its two ends are shoes, 4.4 cm tall, that slide between the pillar guides D, D of the framing with 0.02 cm clearance. A is free to move across, up and down and to turn. Only the wrist and the pillars hold it.
Measured
Cross-head A runs its full 8 cm stroke, twice the crank. It stays within 0.2 mm of its line, and rocks no more than its shoes' clearance allows (0.53 degrees) as the wrist's push changes sides. The deepest contact is 0.008 mm.
Notes
Brown gives no sizes. The crank, the slot and the shoes are choices. A fly-wheel keeps the crank turning evenly against the cross-head's weight.
