Air-pump of simple construction

Air-pump of simple construction. Smaller tub inverted in larger one. The latter contains water to upper dotted line, and the pipe from shaft or space to be exhausted passes through it to a few inches above water, terminating with valve opening upward. Upper tub has short pipe and upwardly-opening valve at top, and is suspended by ropes from levers. When upper tub descends, great part of air within is expelled through upper valve, so that, when afterward raised, rarefaction within causes gas or air to ascend through the lower valve. This pump was successfully used for drawing off carbonic acid from a large and deep shaft.

Only the input is driven; every other part of this model moves by physics (MuJoCo), and its ratios are measured. Run it live, change its parameters, or switch the friction off to see the output stop.

Modelled as
Seen from in front, both tubs cut away in half section, gravity on. The smaller tub (the bell, 28 cm inside, 4 kg) hangs inverted in the larger tub of water by a rope from a lever, which a man works (swung ±0.15 rad at 0.5 Hz, the only drive). The pipe from the shaft rises through the water to a few cm over it and ends in a valve opening upward; the bell's crown has a short pipe and a valve opening upward. The bell's inside is a lumped chamber of water under air joined under its rim to the tub's water (an open chamber), so the water inside stands lower or higher than outside by the air's pressure. The shaft is a 20 L space of air that takes fresh air in at its mouth. Gas into a chamber now goes into its air (OpenSpec fix-gas-into-chamber-air). Both waters are drawn from their levels.
Measured
The bell rises and falls about ±4.5 cm. Falling by its weight, its air goes to about +640 Pa and leaves by the crown valve; rising, it falls to about −2 kPa and draws about 4.6 g/s of air from the shaft through the lower valve, while the water inside rises above the outside level. The shaft settles at about −1.5 kPa. Gate: pytest 2 passed, lint 0 FAIL, motion gate pass, no flags; tests/test_vessels.py (air from a source fills a sealed chamber's air and leaves its water alone) passes, and the WASM matches native.
Notes
Grade B. There is one lever where Brown has levers. The rope runs through a fixed guide on a bracket from the post, which the model needs because a rope needs a round to pass over. The valves are check links and are drawn shut. The shaft is lumped.
