Pair of edge runners or chasers for crushing or grinding
Pair of edge runners or chasers for crushing or grinding. The axles are connected with vertical shaft, and the wheels or chasers run in an annular pan or trough.
Only the input is driven; every other part of this model moves by physics (MuJoCo), and its ratios are measured. Run it live, change its parameters, or switch the friction off to see the output stop.
Modelled as
The driving shaft at the top right is the only driven part, at 40 rev/min. Its vertical bevel-gear (20 teeth, 4 cm pitch radius) turns the horizontal one (40 teeth, 8 cm) on the upright shaft. Low on the upright a crosshead carries the two axles, each hinged so that its chaser can rise. The chasers are stone wheels, 6 cm in radius and 4 cm broad, standing on the pan's floor 9 cm out from the upright. They are rolled round by the crosshead and turn on their axles only through the friction of the floor.
Measured
The upright turns at half the driving shaft's speed (measured 0.500). Each chaser turns on its axle 1.81 times for each turn of the upright. A broad flat wheel can roll at any radius from 7 to 11 cm (1.17 to 1.83 turns): it bears on its outer edge and scrubs across the rest of its face, which is the grinding. Contact penetration stays under 0.1 mm.
Notes
Brown gives no sizes. The pan's sloping rim and the frame are drawn only; the floor is flat and empty, with no stuff in it to crush.
