Another variety

Only the input is driven; every other part of this model moves by physics (MuJoCo), and its ratios are measured. Run it live, change its parameters, or switch the friction off to see the output stop.

Modelled as

The plate's chain of flat links (pitch 2.4), inner and outer plates alternately, hinged on their pins, each link with a tooth beneath it. The wheel is notched round its rim (16 notches, so the chain lies on it as a 16-gon): the links rest on the rim between the notches and each tooth enters a notch and is pushed by its side. The right-hand end carries a 0.4 kg weight in vertical guides and the left end hangs free (gravity on). Only the wheel is driven (4 rpm, counter-clockwise).

Measured

The weight rises 0.0612 m per radian of the wheel (expect 0.0611, the pitch radius of the 16-sided chain path), r-squared 1.0000. Max penetration 0.01 mm.

Notes

The plate gives no sizes; the description says only Another variety (of chain and pulley, after Nos. 227 and 228).
