Uniform circular motion into reciprocating rectilinear motion, by…
Uniform circular motion into reciprocating rectilinear motion, by means of mutilated pinion, which drives alternately the top and bottom rack.
Only the input is driven; every other part of this model moves by physics (MuJoCo), and its ratios are measured. Run it live, change its parameters, or switch the friction off to see the output stop.
Modelled as
A 16-space pinion (module 0.8) with teeth on 6 of them turns continuously at 30 rpm inside an oval frame whose top and bottom bars carry racks facing in. Its teeth draw the top rack and the frame to the right, then half a turn on the bottom rack and the frame back to the left. A drag on the frame slide stops it in the dwells.
Measured
Frame slope +0.0641 then -0.0640 m/rad vs +-0.064 (r2 0.9999); stroke about 19 cm; penetration 0.13 mm.
Notes
The pinion is the only driven joint; the frame goes where the racks are pushed.
