Circular into rectilinear motion, or vice versa, by means of rack and pinion.
Only the input is driven; every other part of this model moves by physics (MuJoCo), and its ratios are measured. Run it live, change its parameters, or switch the friction off to see the output stop.
Modelled as
A 16-tooth pinion (module 0.8, straight-flanked 20-degree teeth) is swung to and fro by the hand through 1.6 rad each way. Above it a 17-tooth rack slides in a line, its back held by two rollers on the plate. Real tooth contact.
Measured
Rack slope 0.0647 m/rad vs 0.064 (pitch radius 6.4 cm), r2 1.0000; stroke +-10.3 cm; penetration 0.06 mm.
Notes
The pinion is the only driven joint; the rack goes where the teeth push it.
